Massage Therapy
Don't be deceived by the name, sports massage is not just for athletes; individuals from their teens to their eighties enjoy sports massage for a variety of reasons. Sufferers of chronic pain, fibromyalgia and a variety of other chronic issues find relief from sports massage. It can also be very effective in treating the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. Research has shown that massage can reduce the stress hormone cortisol, it can also increase serotonin and dopamine, which are the neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.
In terms of general wellbeing, sports massage can help to improve flexibility, range of motion and fluidity of movement. It also helps improve self awareness of the body and can be used to improve proprioception (the ability to sense stimuli arising in the body regarding position and motion of the joints), giving the body a better sense of balance.
Post-operatively, massage can help support recovery, reduce pain and assist with optimal range of movement. Because I am also trained in Scar Therapy I can help to reduce fascial restrictions and adhesions to help the feel and appearance of the scar, and provide general scar advice.
Massage can also be used effectively for the treatment of tension headaches and other tension related issues. Postural issues and RSI related issues have risen as we spend longer hours in desk based occupations or in front of hand held devices. These can respond well to massage, although homecare exercises are often recommended to make long term improvements to these types of conditions. Any such relevant homecare considerations will be discussed with you during your appointment, with follow up information provided as necessary.
